Restore and Grow

Recovery means giving the body and mind the time, space and conditions they need to repair, adapt and replenish, through sleep, rest, relaxation, stillness and periods of doing less. We don’t become stronger simply by continually demanding more from ourselves. Challenge provides the stimulus; recovery is where the body repairs, adapts and becomes capable of meeting the next challenge. Recovery is therefore not the opposite of activity. It is an essential part of growth.

What does the evidence say?

Sleep and recovery are fundamental biological processes, not luxuries. An overview of 36 systematic reviews involving more than 4.4 million people found that around 7–8 hours of sleep per day was most favourably associated with health. A separate umbrella review found that sleep durations at either extreme were associated with poorer outcomes across cardiovascular, metabolic, cognitive and mental health measures. Recovery also matters for physical adaptation: training creates a stress that the body responds to, while adequate rest and sleep provide the conditions for repair and adaptation.

How recovery has woven itself into my life

Resting in a field after a race, wrapped up with a coffee

For much of my life I have been drawn towards doing more, training harder, achieving more, pushing further and filling my time. That determination has taken me to some amazing places. It helped me compete, coach, raise a family, build businesses and eventually cycle and travel across continents. It also came at a cost. Years of pushing through pain eventually led to a diagnosis of endometriosis and, later, a hysterectomy. Eventually my body made the decision for me. I had to stop training, stop competing and completely rethink my relationship with exercise. I had to learn how to listen. I’ve increasingly come to understand that health isn’t created by endlessly adding stress. Training, work, relationships and life itself all create demands; recovery determines how well I can meet them. Sleep, quiet, meditation, time in nature, slower days and simply allowing myself not to be productive have become part of the practice. Recovery is teaching me that rest isn’t wasted time. It is the space in which the body and mind catch up with everything life asks of them. Recovery at Organic Adventures is the pillar that holds everything together.
